"Let all that greets us this month of miracles register the beauty that surrounds us. May the fragrance of each flower, each precious rain drop and the glorious colours of all May days refresh our hearts and remind us of the gifts given. Let us be truly present to the wonder of each moment. There is nothing more beautiful." ~Linda Ellefson, President, Creston Art Club

I Have A New Appreciation For Spiders!

"The artist is a receptacle for the emotions that come from all over the place; from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spider's web."
  ~Pablo Picasso

I have a new appreciation for spiders and the webs they weave, thanks to my friend Win Dinn!  I spent an enjoyable morning in Wins studio this past weekend learning this fabulous new technique known as cobwebbing.  (Win is a master at mixed media, and has an arsenal of techniques that she uses to create her beautiful paintings with.)

©me learning the cobweb technique, May 2013

Win started by taping a piece of 140 lb cold-pressed watercolour paper to a sheet of butcher paper sitting over top of a thick piece of cardboard. (mine is taped onto a sheet of plywood)

She then demonstrated how to carefully pull and pin the cobwebbing across your paper, pinning the threads in place at the outside edges of your taped paper. The goal is to spread and pin a variety of fine to medium fine pieces and think about creating interesting patterns while you work.

Make sure that you have the webbing across all 4 corners as this will give you a better overall design.  Win also explained that the key is to ensure that the webbing touches the paper completely in all areas.  Now the real fun begins......

We sprayed and then painted water onto the paper surface; again, ensure that all webbing lays flat on the paper.  You can then begin spraying your colours of choice!  We used thinned acrylic paints by Dylusion Inks, along with some metallic spritzers. (you can purchase these through Ranger Inks.)  You could also use watercolour (as I will be).

When the paper is almost dry, remove the pins and slowly pull the webbing away, as Win is doing here.  When the paper has dried completely, a richly colored, mysteriously textural pattern is revealed!

Win's finished cobweb design......

Drum roll please!  My finished cobweb design.....

I can't wait to use this technique in one of my next paintings!  Win cautions that if you are using this technique with watercolour be sure to spray a workable fixative onto the paper before continuing on with your painting.

Here is one of Win's finished paintings using this technique.(and one of my favorites) You can see more examples in her series of paintings titled Wingdings shown on her blog here.  And more photos of our playing on Win's blog post here.

Creston Valley Bird Festival, Art Show and Sale, May 10 - 12, 2013

"Just as the bird sings or the butterfly soars, because it is his natural characteristic, so the artist works." ~ Alma Gluck

This weekend promises to be an exciting one for all bird and nature lovers here in the valley!  Our first bird festival kicks off with an Art Show and Sale Friday evening from 5 to 8pm at the Creston Community Complex.  Featuring bird and nature paintings and photography by local artists.  Full details herehttp://www.crestonvalleybirds.ca/

The birds in this painting are just two of several porcelain and pottery birds that I have started collecting.  They add a bit of fun and whimsy to my still life paintings.  The raku bowl is by kootenay artist Kim Chernoff of Crestova Clay Works.  Splattering paint, spraying water and tossing salt on this piece made it an enjoyable experience for me.

Speaking of birds, more hummingbird's arrived yesterday and the activity at the feeders last night was a joy to watch!  Rufus, Calliope and Black Chin (i think) all vying for a drink of nectar.  I never tire of watching these amazing little hummers!!!

Have a great week!

Art Show-A Kootenay Summer-Opens Today, Key City Theater, Cranbrook, BC

"There is a wonderful feeling when you walk into your own exhibition. You see the work as a true extension of yourself. Win or lose, your interests have led you to an accumulation of your personal expression, signed lower right, mounted to best advantage."   ~Robert Genn

A Kootenay Summer....opens today at the Key City Theatre Gallery in Cranbrook, BC.

We hung the paintings for this show on Monday and it was so exciting and rewarding  to see the results of our "labor of love" finally come together.  Each artist's vision is beautifully showcased in their own unique style and medium.

"A Kootenay Summer" is a colorful and joyful representation of a summer in the koot's!

My Newest Painting Celebrates Roses, Tomatoes And Summers Past

"Love is to the heart what the summer is to the farmer's year.... it brings to harvest all the loveliest flowers of the soul."  ~unknown

What a great feeling it is to have finally completed the last painting for the upcoming Art Show, "A Kootenay Summer" at the Key City Theatre, Cranbrook, BC.

Summer Harvest celebrates my love of roses and the first ripe tomatoes of the season.  My mouth waters in anticipation of that first bite into a juicy ripe tomato. There is nothing quite like it!  And of course the scent of these delicate roses as they waft through the house.  For me, there is sheer pleasure in entering a room with a bouquet of fresh cut roses sitting serenely  in an old and cherished vase; or in this case, a beautiful crystal vase that sparkles in the light.  It makes an ordinary day feel special and creates simple, happy memories of summers past.

If you had to choose, would it be a bouquet of roses from the garden or a bowl of home grown tomatoes?   But then really, why choose when you can have them both?!

For now, I am happy to wait for springs first bulbs to bloom in my garden.

Have yourself a great weekend,

My 3rd painting for the April Art Show is taking shape.

"Each painting is a kind of discovery, a discovery of new forms, color relation, or balance in composition. With every painting completed, the artist may change his viewpoint to suit the discoveries made, making his vision many-sided."                                                                    ~Robert Colquhoun

   Laura Leeder, March 2013

March has been an extremely busy month as I continued to work on paintings for the upcoming art show this April at the Key City Theatre in Cranbrook, BC.

I have completed the raku pottery painting (Timeless Treasures) and dropped it off with Emmie and Ian,(Creston Professional Framing and Art Gallery) a wonderful talented duo who look after all my framing and printing needs!  I have this painting above and one more to go and a deadline looming.

On a personal note the spring fever bug hit and Ivor and I went on a cleaning frenzy, organizing and decluttering our home from top to bottom.  While our home looks and feels better, we are totally worn out!

With no time to spare, I will be in my studio painting for the remainder of the week.

Have a wonderful and creative week!

Artfully Yours,

New painting in-progress and Winner Of The Draw Announced!

"An artist finds his happiest combination in a play of complementary colors. They are direct contrasts yet do not jar; they awaken the beholder, but do not disturb him."
  ~Charles Burchfield

   Laura Leeder, February 2013

My goal for this week was to complete the still life painting with raku pottery posted earlier this month and start a new sketch.  Well, I started the new sketch and then I just couldn't stop!  I began by exploring several color options for the background.  Using the backs of practise paintings (okay, failed attempts) I played with several colors and ideas. In the end, I chose to do a complimentary background using 3 shades of greens.  These colors were not blended on the palette but allowed to mingle directly onto the watercolour paper. On impulse, I then sprayed water onto the paper and sprinkled an ample amount of salt across the wet paper as well.  I then crossed my fingers and waiting anxiously for the background to dry.  (A rather risky chance to take when you are working against a deadline!!)

As I charged in the various greens I tried to think about their placement in relation to the tomatoes and roses.  I sometimes feel that the background is accomplished more through luck than planning or execution!!  Don't get me wrong, I'm not about to start dropping in paint with my eyes closed yet!!   My one concern is the leaves in the vase.  The actual leaves are red veined and I plan to paint these leaves a deeper red overall.  I am hopeful that this will give the separation needed from my multi textured green background!

AND NOW....ON TO THE WINNER OF THE GICLEE PRINT!!

Congratulations goes to Morgen Bordati!

Peonies-Vibrant, Hardy, Fragrant

"Vision, Uncertainty, and Knowledge of Materials are inevitability's that all artists must acknowledge and learn from: vision is always ahead of execution, knowledge of materials is your contact with reality, and uncertainty is a virtue."  ~David Bayles

©Pink Perfection-Peony Blossoms, February 2013
   Laura Leeder

I started this painting quite some time ago; but, due to my lack of planning (my eagerness to start painting these blossoms), I quickly hit a roadblock of uncertainty.  With exhibition deadlines looming, I was forced to set it aside and work on other paintings. I recently pulled it out again and after wrestling with how to resolve what I considered to be the problems, I finally managed to complete it!

These blossoms are from my own garden.  They have been dug up and moved many times over the years and each time they punish me for a season by producing no blossoms.  By the following season I am forgiven and they once again tempt me with their large, beautiful, fragrant blossoms.

These ancient flowers have been known to outlive people, thriving for a hundred years or more!  They embody romance and prosperity and are regarded as an omen of good fortune and a happy marriage.

The size of this painting is 19.25" x 15.25" and will be included in "Summer In The Kootenays", a group art show and sale this coming April.  (see 2013 Events Page)

Draw Date for FREE PRINT of DANCE WITH JOY is February 28th,2012
